Ask anyone who grew up in Kerala about hair oil and you will hear about a grandmother, a bottle of dark herbal oil and a Sunday morning ritual. The habit is sound. The problem is that most people use one oil for every hair problem, when Kerala Ayurveda has always made different oils for different jobs.
First, find out what the problem actually is
Part your hair in good light and look at the skin, not the hair.
- If the scalp is flaking, dry, itchy or uncomfortable, the problem is the scalp. You need a scalp-first oil.
- If the scalp looks fine but the hair is dull, limp, rough or damaged, the problem is the hair itself. You need a hair-conditioning oil.
Many people have both. In that case, settle the scalp first, then move on to the hair.
Scalp-first oils
Classical Kerala kadi oils are made for the skin under the hair. Our Vasabringamalakadi Herbal Hair Oil is one of them — Vasa, Bhringaraj and Amalaki cooked into an oil base by traditional method. Use it when flaking and dryness are the main complaint.
Hair-conditioning oils
These are built around how the hair looks and feels: shine, softness and body. Karmukhil Herbal Hair Oil, made with herbs from the Wayanad hills, is this kind of oil. Use it when hair has gone limp, dull or tired from washing, heat and pollution.
The routine
- Use a small amount — 5–10 ml, depending on hair length.
- Warm it slightly between your palms or by standing the bottle in warm water.
- Apply to the scalp first, section by section, then draw what is left through the lengths.
- Massage for 5–10 minutes with your fingertips, not your nails.
- Leave it for at least an hour, or overnight once a week with an old pillowcase.
- Wash with a mild shampoo. One wash is usually enough; two if the oil is heavy.
How often, and for how long?
Two to three times a week suits most people. Scalp comfort often improves within a few weeks of regular use. Hair texture is slower — give any oil around three months of consistent use before you judge it. Anyone promising a transformation in a fortnight is selling you something.
Mistakes to avoid
- Pouring oil onto the lengths and never reaching the scalp
- Using so much that it takes three shampoos to remove
- Switching oils every week, so none of them gets a fair trial
- Ignoring a scalp that is red, weeping or painful — that needs a doctor, not an oil
What to look for on the bottle
A genuine Ayurvedic hair oil names its herbs, its manufacturer and its licence number on the pack. Both of the oils above carry Manufacturing Licence 10/25D/2018 and are made at a GMP-certified unit in Wayanad. Not sure which suits you? Use our free consultation before ordering.
